Fear At The Dentist … It’s Real! How Do I Overcome it?
“Nothing against you, but I hate the Dentist!” 😒
It never fails that I hear that phrase too often! All of my patients like the person I am, but they have an aversion about going to the dentist - and you are probably in that same camp! Right????
So, how do we overcome the fear of going to the dentist? 🥶
I feel that one of the solutions lies in the dental office that you choose!
Let me explain:
Here at my office in North Richland Hills, we have a priority in meeting our patients expectations. Let me say that again …….. our goal is to meet your expectations!
I’ll give you an example. Let’s say that you go though the drive through at your local McDonalds and you ask for a #2 meal on the menu. Now, I am not a McDonalds regular, but I am pretty sure that a #2 meal consists of a Quarter Pounder with cheese, fries and a drink. When you get to the window, you know exactly what you are going to get - you have an expectation. That expectation is this: You will get a quarter pounder with cheese, fries, whatever drink you ordered, a straw, napkins, some ketchup, and a bag. 🍔🍟🥤
BUT ......... you pull away and look inside the bag and the first thing that you want to grab, but is not there, is your straw to put in your drink! This brings on a whole cascade of events - it raises your blood pressure, anger sets in, your pupils dilate, and your face scowls making more wrinkles on your face than you wanted in the first place (Hello Botox!). All of these events are caused because they forgot to give you a tiny little thing like your straw. What gets you angry though, is not only that they forgot your straw, but now you have to park the car, shut the car off, get everything that you need to take with you (because you don’t want to leave your purse, wallet or phone in the car even just for a second) go into the store, ask for a straw, come back restart the car, etc. This is even worse when you have your kids with you!!! All of this happens just because your expectation wasn’t met and now you have to deal with the aftermath that occurs. UGH! 😠
Now, would the scenario change if I would have told you that all would be in your bag except the straw? YES! You would plan for that. Maybe you might just park and go in, maybe you might bring a straw from home, maybe you will reside to just taking the lid off and drinking from the cup instead? Or maybe you might not go to McDonalds at all???? Either way, you know what to expect and that makes your life much more predictable and pleasant because you know exactly what’s going to happen.
A major philosophy at our office is ……..
We Will Meet Or Exceed Your Expectations!
When we do that, your fear level drops! WHY??? When you know what to expect during your visit our office, you begin to trust us and that is a HUGE factor in decreasing your fear of the dentist. Trust is a big issue in the medical field today - especially in dentistry! Usually, when I sit and visit with someone for the first time and they have a lot of fear at the dental office, I start by asking, “Tell me about your past dental experiences.” That line alone, opens many doors. In many instances, it leads to discussions of unpleasant events that one has experienced from past dental visits.
From this statement, I can gauge what has bothered them in the past and then ask the question, “What can we do here, at my office, to make your experience better than your last one?” A very common answer to that question is - Just Be Honest and Listen To Me. Keep Me Informed. Then I let them know that we will ALWAYS be honest, we will listen to your concerns, wants and desires, let you know exactly what to expect, give you multiple options for a particular needed treatment, and what the cost of your treatment will be. Knowing all of this is the very first step to allaying your fears and as one gets comfortable with our office, treatments become much better. 😀
Knowing what to Expect + Having Trust in your Dentist and Their Staff = A Decrease in Your Fear of the Dentist!
Therefore, in my opinion, the office that you decide to visit has a major impact on the amount of fear that you will experience.
In summation, if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while or are looking to change dentists, be picky about the office that you choose. After all, this is your health that we are talking about. Remember, your dental health affects your overall health! Therefore, ask those hard questions. Does the person on the phone sound friendly and knowledgeable? Have they answered all of your questions satisfactorily? Do you know what to expect when you arrive your first visit? Of course, we would love for you to visit our office and have the chance to earn your and your family’s trust but, if you have any questions or you just need some guidance in choosing the right dentist, give us a call! We would be more than happy to talk with you about any fears that you have.
